The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested retired Bangladesh Army officer Major Abdul Hafiz from the capital’s Banani late on Saturday night over alleged links to the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) revolt plot and activities detrimental to state security.
A team of detectives conducted a raid on a residential
building in Banani around midnight following specific allegations regarding his
direct and indirect connections with perpetrators and key planners of the
bloody massacre at the Peelkhana BDR headquarters.
Law enforcement sources said the former military officer is also facing accusations of being involved in several sensitive initiatives compromising national security.
Confirming the arrest, a senior DB official said that Hafiz
was taken to the DB headquarters on Minto Road shortly after his detention.
Investigators are interrogating him thoroughly concerning
his suspected role in the conspiracy behind the BDR mutiny and other anti-state
operations, the official added.
