A 60-year-old rickshaw puller was seriously injured after a car belonging to retired Additional Inspector General of Police and former Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Md Sibgat Ullah hit his rickshaw in the capital’s Paltan area on Saturday night.
The incident took place around 8:00pm on a road off Box Culvert Road, about 100 metres from Paltan Tower. The car, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-Gha-19-7077, hit the rickshaw, leaving its puller, identified as Sultan, critically injured.
Pedestrians rescued the injured man and took him to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), known as Pangu Hospital, for treatment.
The front portion of the car was also damaged in the collision. Police later seized the vehicle and took it to Paltan Police Station. However, the driver could not be found.
Local residents and eyewitnesses claimed that Sibgat Ullah’s 20-year-old driver was driving the car at the time of the accident.
However, Sibgat Ullah later said his driver, Al Amin, was driving his car.
He assured that they would bear all the expenses for the victim’s medical treatment.
Shafiqul Islam, inspector (investigation) of Paltan Police Station, said the car was being parked at a house on the road when the accident occurred.
“According to our initial assessment, the driver may have mistakenly shifted the gear to drive instead of reverse while trying to park the car. A rickshaw was parked on the opposite side of the road, where the puller was resting. The car hit the rickshaw at that moment,” he said.
He said the house where the car was being parked belonged to a female friend of Sibgat Ullah’s son, who visited the residence frequently.
The inspector said police were yet to confirm who was driving the car and were investigating the incident.
Sabbir Ali Kuli, a security guard at the house, said he was not present at the scene when the accident happened as he had gone to visit an ill relative.
He said the car was usually driven by a driver and that he had never seen Sibgat Ullah’s son driving it before.
Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostafa Kamal Khan confirmed the incident, saying the rickshaw puller was receiving treatment at Pangu Hospital.
He said, “After receiving information, police rushed to the spot and found the car and the damaged rickshaw there. However, the driver was not present at the spot."
The OC said police later took the car and the damaged rickshaw to the police station.
“We are looking into the matter and taking legal steps over the incident,” he said.
