Students who failed in one or two subjects in this year’s HSC and equivalent examinations will sit a special re-examination, preferably within a month, to avoid losing an academic year.

Education Minister Dr ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Education Mahdi Amin announced the decision at the Secretariat on Saturday during the HSC results programme.

“Of the 594,113 students who failed this year’s HSC and equivalent examinations, 422,905 failed in one or two subjects. We will arrange a special examination for them very soon so that they do not lose a valuable year of their lives,” Milon said. He said the date would balance preparation time against the admission process: a week would be too short, while a long delay would disrupt admissions. The examination would not be held later than a month, he added.

Milon acknowledged that the results had exposed shortcomings in learning and said the ministry and education boards would take steps to address them. He urged guardians and teachers to support students who had failed and not to lose hope.

Mahdi Amin called the re-examination a landmark decision. He said the examinations and script evaluation had been conducted impartially under the prime minister’s instructions, and that the government had prioritised merit-based assessment over past practices of inflating pass rates and GPA-5 results.

He said strict measures had been taken against question paper leaks, with CCTV expanded at examination centres and body-worn cameras used. Following the SSC model, candidates were given the opportunity for comprehensive rescrutiny of answer scripts for the first time in this year’s HSC, he added.
