Police recovered three items that resemble crude bombs from
an area where garment workers staged demonstrations in Ashulia of Dhaka on
Saturday.
The objects were found after the workers of a garment
factory brought out a procession and vandalised nearby factories at
Nischintapur area in Ashulia, said Syed Faisal Islam, additional superintendent
of Ashulia Industrial Police-1.
At least 10 policemen, including members of industrial police, were injured, when officers tried to resist the agitators, Syed Faisal told reporters.
The workers took to the streets, demanding pay hike and end
to arbitrary dismissals, and afterwards engaged in violence.
Syed Faisal said the protesters inflicted violence despite
police urging them to protest peacefully and avoid causing public suffering.
He said officers believed that the protesters were likely “incited”
or “misled” by outsiders.
Earlier on Saturday, the authorities of New Age Garments in
the area suspended the day’s operation, fearing amid the workers’ protests in
the area.
Shortly after the work suspension, the workers took to the
streets, and started throwing brick chips at nearby factories.
After the workers turned violent, police recovered three
crude bomb-like objects from the area.
Police initially tried to pacify them by voicing support for
their “legitimate demands”, and cautioning about public suffering.
However, as the protesters remained defiant, police decided to intervene, leading to a clash that left 10 law enforcers injured, said Syed Faisal Islam.
