A 10-year-old boy allegedly died by suicide at his residence in the capital's Hatirpool area on Friday evening.

Mohammad Raihan, Hasan's maternal uncle, said the boy was alone at home as other family members went out for work.

“Family members spotted him through a window, hanging from a ceiling fan with a scarf around his neck. They broke open the door, rescued him and rushed him to the hospital,” he said.

Hasan was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 6:30pm, where doctors declared him dead at 7pm.

His aunt, Swapna Begum, said Hasan had experienced mental health difficulties since childhood and often displayed inattentive and restless behaviour.

She said he had spent around two months at a madrasa in Dhaka but did not want to stay there.

After returning to their village, she said, Hasan was admitted to another madrasa, but he began crying and refused to stay there. Considering his distress, his father brought him back to Dhaka a month ago.

DMCH police outpost in-charge Inspector Mohammad Habibur Rahman said the body was kept at the hospital morgue and Kalabagan police station had been informed.
