Police have recovered the skeleton of a man, who had been missing for three and a half years, from a septic tank at a house in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj.

The remains of Mahabbat Ali, 39, were recovered from the septic tank at a house in Ramnagar village on Friday afternoon.

Four people have been detained over their alleged involvement in the incident.

The detainees are Shah Alam, 42, his wife Jahanara Begum, 34, Zainal Mia and Yasin Mia, all residents of Ramnagar village. Police said they recovered the skeleton based on information provided by the detainees.

According to police sources, Mahabbat was the son of Rusmat Ali of the same village. Although he worked as a farmer, he was locally known for providing information to law enforcement agencies and acting as an informant.

Mahabbat went missing on 30 July, 2023. His family searched for him in different places but failed to trace him. His brother, Rusmat Ali, subsequently filed a case with Madhabpur Police Station.

However, the mystery surrounding his disappearance remained unresolved for a long time.

Following an extensive investigation and the use of technology, the District Detective Branch (DB) arrested four people suspected of involvement in the incident. Their information led police to the septic tank, where the skeleton was recovered.

The recovery has caused a stir in the locality after more than three years of uncertainty over Mahabbat's disappearance.

Sub-Inspector Saidur Rahman of the District Detective Branch said four people had been detained following a lengthy investigation.

The skeleton was sent for autopsy, and legal proceedings in the case were underway, he added.
