Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin has said planned initiatives, productive activities and continued diplomatic efforts internationally have made it possible to defer Bangladesh’s graduation from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status by three years.
“Bangladesh will graduate from the LDC category on
24 November 2029 instead of 24 November 2026,” Mahdi said.
According to Mahdi, the deferral will provide more
time to prepare the country’s economy, industries, export-import, businesses
and employment for the transition.
“The significance of this decision lies in
continuing inclusive development, so that LDC graduation cannot create
unexpected pressure on the country’s economy and peoples’ livelihoods,” Mahdi
added.
In a social media post, Mahdi further said, “This
achievement is not only a subject of extending the timeline. Rather, it is a reflection
of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's effective leadership to garner global
support to implement much needed policies and plans for protecting Bangladesh’s
interests, presenting the country’s situation and changing the peoples’ fate.”
