The government has ordered public servants who rented out or sublet their government-allotted flats to evict all tenants by 31 October or face cancellation of their housing allocations.

The Directorate of Government Accommodation has directed all allotment holders to personally reside in their assigned flats. Those found renting out or subletting their accommodation after the deadline will lose their allocations and face disciplinary and legal action.

The Directorate under the Ministry of housing and public Works issued an urgent public notice on Thursday, warning all government housing allotment holders against violating rules.

According to the notice, recent inspections found that some government employees had rented out entire flats or individual rooms to others, violating the Bangladesh Allocation Rules,1982.

The notice strictly prohibits allotment holders from subletting or renting out any portion of their assigned accommodation. Those already involved in such practices must remove their tenants by October 31 and occupy the flats themselves.

After the deadline, authorities will cancel the allocations without seeking an explanation if they find any tenants or subtenants in the flats. They will also take disciplinary and legal action under the relevant rules.

Under Rule 14(3) of the Bangladesh Allocation Rules, 1982, the Directorate will inform the concerned allottee’s office head and controlling authority and request disciplinary action against the employee.

Officials said government flats in areas including Azimpur, Motijheel and Mirpur in the capital have long been rented out by employees who do not live in their allotted accommodation.

According to Directorate statistics, the capital has a total of 19,091 government residential units of different categories.

These include 114 secretariat residences and 79 bungalows. The government also has 558 superior-category flats for officials of Grade 3 and above, 1,899 for Grade 5 and above, 1,890 for Grade 6 and above, 2,632 for Grades 7-9 and 4,890 for Grades 10-12. Another 775 flats are reserved exclusively for Grade 9 officials.

In addition, 1,084 flats are allocated to employees in Grades 12-13, 1,574 to Grades 14-15, 2,513 to Grades 16-17 and 2,061 to Grades 18-20.
