A tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced a Dhaka Bar Association lawyer, Mobarak Hossain Mohon, to three years in prison in a case filed over the sexual harassment of a woman in the capital’s Wari area.
Judge Muntasir Ahmed of the Dhaka Women and Children
Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 pronounced the verdict on Thursday.
The court also fined him Tk5,000, sentencing him to
one more month of simple imprisonment in default of payment.
Public prosecutor Shahina Akter confirmed the
information, saying Mobarak appeared before the court before the verdict was
announced. He was later sent to jail under a conviction warrant.
According to the case statement, Mobarak is the
husband of the victim’s cousin-in-law. They lived in separate rooms in the same
house in the Bhajohari Saha Street area of Wari.
The accused allegedly made inappropriate proposals
and gestures towards the woman on several occasions. She informed her husband
about the matter, but he did not disclose it to anyone else for fear of social
embarrassment.
On 20 August 2017, at around 8:45pm, Mobarak
allegedly grabbed the woman from behind beside the kitchen of the house and
sexually harassed her.
Later, the woman filed a case with Wari police station
on the same day. Police submitted a charge sheet against the accused on 30
September 2017.
The tribunal framed charges against him on 1 April
2019 and commenced the trial. During the trial, the court recorded the
testimony of 12 of the 16 witnesses.
