The parliamentary standing committee on the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has recommended conducting joint market investigations and monitoring against unfair price hikes, excessive profits by middlemen, artificial crises, and supply chain irregularities in fish, meat, milk, and eggs.

The recommendation was made during the second meeting of the JS body held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Wednesday with the committee chairman Khairul Kabir Khokon, MP, in the chair.

The meeting was attended by State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, committee members Sheikh Md Rezaul Islam, Prof Nazrul Islam, MA Hannan, Ali Azam Md Abu Bakar and Md Amir Hamza. Minister Mohammad Aminur Rashid attended the meeting at the special invitation of the committee chairman.

The committee urged the ministry to work jointly with the Ministry of Commerce, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection and other relevant agencies to investigate the allegations and take necessary measures.

The meeting emphasised the need to increase fisheries and livestock production, ensure supplies at fair prices, protect consumer rights and continue market monitoring.

It also stressed the importance of establishing fish sanctuaries in water bodies and providing support to farmers at the upazila and district levels.

In another recommendation, the committee called for a comprehensive action plan to explore marine fisheries resources, expand fish harvesting and increase fish exports to international markets.

The plan is to be prepared and submitted to the committee for consideration.

The meeting also directed the ministry to present an update on ongoing recruitment activities across all departments and agencies under its jurisdiction at the next meeting.

Emphasising accountability in public administration, the committee instructed the authorities to complete development projects within their stipulated deadlines and ensure accountability of the officials responsible for implementation.
