Dhaka district administration is set to launch a Japanese-style cleaning programme at 21 schools to promote cleanliness, instil a sense of responsibility among students and raise awareness about dengue prevention.

Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman Mia inaugurated the pilot project of the ‘Clean School Team’ at the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner’s office at 11am on Wednesday (28 October). Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Farida Khanam was also present.

Under the initiative, students will spend 15-20 minutes daily cleaning safe areas, including classrooms, corridors and libraries, under teachers’ supervision. Designated staff will clean toilets, dirty drains and other hazardous areas.

Schools will also conduct weekly inspections for dengue risks, identify stagnant water and take necessary measures. Students will learn waste segregation and composting organic waste.

The administration will also promote household cleanliness through the ‘My Home, My Responsibility’ programme and plans to reward schools, classes and students for outstanding efforts in cleanliness and dengue prevention.

Khanam said the initiative would teach students responsibility, respect for labour and care for the environment, beyond keeping school premises clean.

Moniruzzaman Mia said the habit of maintaining clean schools would have a positive impact on students’ families and wider communities.

The district administration formed Clean School Teams at educational institutions in Dhaka on July 8. After reviewing cleaning practices in several countries for nearly three months, it adapted Japan’s O-soji model to local conditions.
