Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) launched a large-scale eviction drive in the capital’s Gulistan area on Wednesday to clear footpaths of illegal encroachments. The drive began in the Fulbaria area around 10:00am.
According to local and city corporation sources, DSCC workers began removing illegal shops and structures built on footpaths in Fulbaria. Encroachers who had long been occupying the footpaths to run businesses are being evicted.
Heavy machinery, including payloaders, is being used to demolish the illegal structures. Seized goods and equipment are being loaded onto city corporation vehicles and taken away following the evictions.
Four DSCC executive magistrates are conducting the drive at the scene. They are Chief Estate Officer Md Rezaul Karim, Chief Revenue Officer Jonaid Kabir Sohag, Estate Officer and Executive Magistrate Hasiba Khan, and Executive Magistrate (Senior Assistant Secretary) Md Aminul Islam.
DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam is also present at the scene.
City corporation authorities said the drive would continue to keep footpaths free from encroachment and ensure safe and unobstructed movement for pedestrians.
