Fresh canal demarcations nearly complete, says DNCC chief

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said on Tuesday that canal demarcation by the previous administration was flawed, with fresh demarcation work nearing completion.

“There were some flaws in the demarcation of canals, and this work is being done anew. A committee led by the DNCC chief engineer is working to resolve discrepancies in canal demarcation. Some 85-90% of the work has been completed by the committee,” he said.

He added that the DNCC would begin eviction and rehabilitation after the boundary demarcation was finalised.

He made these remarks while attending a cleaning drive at the historic Paris Canal in Mirpur.

French Ambassador to Bangladesh Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet attended the campaign as a special guest and assured the DNCC of assistance in improving the canal’s condition, as it is named after the French capital.

Shafiqul said the DNCC was working to restore and clean canals in line with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s vision of a “Clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka”, but public cooperation was essential to sustaining the efforts.

He urged residents not to dump household or construction waste directly into canals, warning that keeping them clean was particularly important to prevent mosquito breeding ahead of the dengue season.

A three-day special cleaning campaign at the Paris Canal is being jointly conducted by the DNCC and volunteer organisation Footsteps.
