A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered that Diamond World Managing Director (MD) Dilip Kumar Agarwala be sent to jail after the completion of his second round of remand in an attempted murder case linked to the July uprising.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain passed the order after a hearing, said Sub-Inspector Helal Uddin of the Prosecution Division.
Earlier in the day, the investigating officer in the case, Sub-Inspector Md Sumon Mia of Uttara West Police Station, produced the accused before the court after completing the two-day remand and sought an order to keep him in jail.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Dilip Kumar Agarwala in the capital’s Banani area on 19 October.
The following day, a court granted him one day’s remand in a money laundering case filed over alleged smuggling worth Tk6,781.9 crore.
On 21 October, the court ordered him to be sent to jail after the end of his one-day remand.
Subsequently, the court placed him on remand twice after he was shown arrested in a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of student Abul Jabbar, who was shot during the July uprising.
According to the case statement, Abul Jabbar was shot in front of BNS Centre on the Dhaka–Mymensingh Highway under Uttara West Police Station on 5 August 2024, during the final hours of the July uprising. He received hospital treatment until 26 September that year.
After recovering, Jabbar filed the attempted murder case with Uttara West Police Station on 27 March 2025. The case named 50 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and another 100 to 150 unidentified people as accused.
Meanwhile, on 25 October, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a petition seeking to show Dilip Kumar Agarwala arrested in a case filed over acquiring wealth beyond his known sources of income.
ACC Assistant Director and investigating officer Sajjad Hossain filed the application with the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court. The court later set 2 November for a hearing on the petition with the accused present.
Agarwala, 57, is a member of the Awami League’s central sub-committee on industry and commerce and a parliamentary candidate from Chuadanga-1.
He was previously arrested by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on 3 September 2024 and was subsequently shown arrested in a murder case concerning the death of Hridoy Ahmed, linked to the July uprising. He was granted bail in the case and released from prison.
