A total of 174 undocumented Bangladeshi nationals were repatriated from Tripoli, Libya, to Bangladesh on Tuesday morning after expressing their willingness to return home voluntarily.

The repatriation was carried out through a joint initiative involving the Bangladesh government, the Libyan government and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The returnees arrived in Bangladesh at 5:40am aboard a Buraq Air flight, UZ-222, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Most of the returnees reportedly entered Libya illegally after being lured and assisted by human traffickers who promised them opportunities to travel to Europe by sea. Many of them were allegedly abducted and tortured in Libya at different times.

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the IOM welcomed the returnees at the airport.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged them to share their harrowing experiences with others to raise public awareness about the dangers associated with irregular migration and human trafficking.

The IOM provided each returnee with transportation expenses, some food supplies and basic medical assistance. Temporary accommodation was also arranged for those who needed it.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the IOM are continuing to work together to ensure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals held in various detention centres in Libya.
