A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Diamond World Managing
Director Dilip Kumar Agarwala on a two-day remand for further interrogation in
an attempted murder case linked to the July Uprising, upon completion of an
earlier four-day remand in the case.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir
Hossain passed the order after a hearing, said state prosecutor Shamsuddoha
Sumon.
Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Sumon Mia of Uttara West
Police Station submitted a petition seeking seven days’ fresh remand for the
accused following the completion of his four-day police remand in the case.
During the hearing, the prosecution argued in favour of the remand petition, while defence lawyers pleaded for its rejection and sought bail. After hearing both sides, the court granted two days' remand.
According to the fresh remand petition, the accused had provided “important information” during the four-day interrogation but “withheld significant details relating to the incident.”
The application stated that further interrogation was
necessary to uncover the actual circumstances of the incident, identify and
arrest other suspects, obtain their names and addresses, and recover the
weapons allegedly used in the incident.
According to the case statement, Abul Jabbar was shot in
front of BNS Centre on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway under Uttara West Police
Station on 5 August 2024, during the final hours of the July-August 2024 Uprising.
He remained under hospital treatment until 26 September that year.
After recovering, Jabbar filed the attempted murder case
with Uttara West Police Station on 27 March 2025. The case named 50 people,
including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as accused and also implicated
another 100 to 150 unidentified people.
Agarwala, 57, is a member of the now-banned Awami League's
central sub-committee on industry and commerce and was a parliamentary
candidate from Chuadanga-1.
The Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested
Agarwala from a residence in the capital's Banani area on 19 October.
The following day, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court placed him on a one-day remand in a money laundering case involving Tk678.19 crore allegedly laundered through gold and diamond smuggling.
