A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced Md Mizanur Rahman to death and fined him Tk1 lakh for strangling his wife over dowry in South Keraniganj.
Judge Munshi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Dhaka Women and
Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict, said state
prosecution lawyer Md Ershad Alam (George).
He said the convict was brought to court from jail for the
pronouncement of the verdict and was later sent back to prison under a sentence
warrant.
According to the case documents, Mizanur allegedly used to
beat his wife, Most Rehana, on various occasions over dowry demands.
On 25 July 2019, Rehana was strangled to death at a rented house in the Char Mirerbag area of South Keraniganj over a demand for Tk50,000 in dowry.
A case was filed with South Keraniganj Police Station over
the incident. On 29 December that year, police submitted a charge sheet against
Mizanur Rahman after completing the investigation.
The tribunal subsequently framed charges against the accused
and ordered the trial to begin. Mizanur Rahman voluntarily made a confessional
statement before a court. During the trial, the prosecution produced 10
witnesses before the tribunal.
