Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday said the government is working to reduce unnecessary expenditure while ensuring adequate spending in essential sectors.

“The government is trying to cut spending in unnecessary areas. However, necessary expenditure will certainly be made,” he said.

The prime minister made the remarks while addressing the “Revenue Conference 2026” as the chief guest at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center in the capital on Tuesday (18 August).

The Internal Resources Division of the Ministry of Finance and the National Board of Revenue (NBR) jointly organised the conference, attended by senior NBR officials and other relevant officials.

The prime minister said clearing public misconceptions about revenue remains a key challenge.

“If everyone performs their respective responsibilities properly, positive changes will come to the country,” he said.

The conference is expected to discuss a range of issues, including ways to increase revenue collection, make tax administration more effective and mobilise the revenue needed to support the country’s economy.
