A group of
activists from Chhatra League and Jubo League, both banned outfits, beat up
three policemen and vandalised a police vehicle at Bedgram Kheyaghat area in
Raghunathpur union of Gopalganj Sadar Upazila on Saturday noon.
The youths used
hockey sticks and other local weapons in the attack, which left Gopalganj Sadar
Police Station Sub-Inspector Fulmia, and Constables Shawkat and Jashim injured,
according to district Police Superintendent Mohammad Habibullah.
The youths launched
the attack even after the on-duty policemen allowed their procession to
continue without causing any provocation, the police superintendent said.
Police
would file a lawsuit over the attack, and are trying to detain the assailants,
he added.
A social
media video of the incident shows a group of youths marching along with local
weapons and chanting slogans like “Joy Bangla” and “Sheikh Hasina Will Return to
a Warm Welcome in Bangladesh.”
Hasina, chief
of the politics-banned Awami League is currently in a self-exile in India, but
there are rumours that she could undertake a daring return journey in December.
