Yet another fire broke out at a hotel near Sugandha Point in Cox’s Bazar town on Friday, with around 300 tourists staying there at the time.

They all managed to leave the hotel safely, averting a potential tragedy just a week after 10 tourists were killed in a fire at a resort in the district.

According to police and Fire Service and Civil Defence officials and hotel authorities, the fire started in the parking area of The Sea Princess Hotel around 4pm.

Pedestrians and hotel staff raised the alarm after noticing billowing smoke. Tourists staying in various rooms of the nine-storey building also hurried out and took shelter on the nearby beach.

A fire service unit rushed to the scene after being informed. Fire service personnel and hotel authorities brought the blaze under control after about half an hour. The fire damaged the generator and other parts of the parking area.

Cox’s Bazar Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Syed Mohammad Morshed Hossain said a unit from the nearest fire station promptly reached the scene and brought the fire under control.

He said the fire was suspected to have originated from a short circuit in the generator. No one was injured or killed in the incident.

The Sea Princess Managing Director Abdul Kader said the hotel had adequate firefighting arrangements. The prompt response of the staff helped avert a major accident, and all the tourists were safe, he added.

On 17 October, 10 tourists were killed in a fire at TupTup Resort in the Inani area of Ukhiya upazila.

Cox’s Bazar is seeing a large influx of tourists during the Durga Puja holidays.
