An indefinite road blockade in Sajek, Rangamati, continued for a second day on Friday as joint forces maintained patrols to control the law-and-order situation and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

The blockade was jointly enforced by the Sajek Ganadhikar Rakkha Committee and the Sajek Karbari Association to press for three demands, including the immediate removal of armed members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti’s Santu group from the area and security for local residents.

The protesters said the blockade would continue indefinitely until their key demands were met.

No untoward incident was reported on Friday, unlike Thursday, when members of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) allegedly opened fire as the Army and police evacuated stranded tourists from Sajek Valley in Bagaichhari upazila.

Army, police and other law enforcement agencies have been working jointly to maintain peace and ensure the safety of people in the area.

Rangamati Superintendent of Police Muhd Abdur Rakib said security measures had been strengthened to restore normalcy in Sajek. Joint forces would continue necessary operations against criminals and armed groups to prevent further incidents, he added.

Meanwhile, the Chhatra-Janata Sangram Parishad has announced a half-day road and waterway blockade in Rangamati and Khagrachhari districts from 5am to noon on Saturday in support of the Sajek movement.

In a statement sent to the media on Thursday, the organisation’s president, Ushatan Chakma, confirmed the programme and expressed solidarity with what he described as the legitimate demands of Sajek residents.

The organisers said ambulances, vehicles carrying patients, fire service vehicles, transport carrying emergency medical supplies and vehicles used by journalists on reporting assignments would be exempt from the blockade on humanitarian grounds.

Earlier on Thursday, nearly 3,000 tourists stranded in Sajek Valley were evacuated with the help of the Army and police amid the blockade. Armed UPDF members allegedly opened fire on tourists and law enforcement personnel during the operation.
