Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has his own plans to develop Bogura and wants the district to progress alongside the rest of the country, his Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman has said.
He made the remarks at a view-exchange meeting in Bogura on Thursday (22 October), attended by State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam as the chief guest. The event was chaired by Bangladesh Pratidin editor Loton Ekram.
“The prime minister has a plan for what Bogura should become,” Ruman said, urging local people to work together to advance the district’s development.
“If we genuinely want to develop Bogura, we must stand shoulder to shoulder and work together to strengthen the prime minister’s hand,” he said.
Referring to road development, Ruman said Tarique had initiated a plan to widen the road from Matidali to Banani to 60 feet. The proposal faced objections from people concerned that shops and homes would be affected, he said.
With greater cooperation at the time, the road could potentially have been widened to 80 or 100 feet, he added.
Criticising past development efforts, Ruman alleged that Bogura had been neglected over the years. He claimed that protests, road blockades and strikes had been organised under different banners to embarrass Tarique and then prime minister Khaleda Zia during the BNP government.
Questioning the development achieved in Bogura over the past 17 years, he said there had been no strong push to establish institutions comparable to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), a university, a divisional headquarters or training centres in the district.
Instead of progressing, Bogura had regressed during that period, he said.
Ruman also expressed disappointment over an international-standard stadium associated with initiatives by the late Arafat Rahman, claiming that it had been rendered ineffective after its construction.
He reiterated that Tarique wanted Bogura to move forward alongside the rest of Bangladesh and called on all stakeholders to work together to achieve that goal.
