Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said trees are indispensable for sustaining and protecting life, as they provide food and shelter, protect people from storms and tidal surges, and supply the oxygen essential for survival.
“Trees are our best friends. There is no alternative to
trees for improving and saving lives,” he said.
He said tree plantation was essential to tackling the
adverse impacts of climate change and maintaining ecological balance.
Against this backdrop, the government has set a target of
planting 250 million trees across the country over the next five years.
The minister made the remarks while briefing journalists
after inaugurating a district-wide programme to sow more than 100,000 palm
seeds at DC Park in Lalmonirhat on Thursday morning.
The programme was organised by Sabuj Seba Juba Biggan Sangha under the slogan, “Let us build a clean environment and adorn the Earth with greenery.”
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Muha Rashedul Haque Pradhan,
Superintendent of Police Md Asaduzzaman, Sabuj Seba Juba Biggan Sangha founder
Md Khairul Islam and more than 100 volunteers were present at the event.
Later, the minister distributed cheques for financial
assistance among underprivileged meritorious students and disadvantaged and
distressed people at Lalmonirhat Circuit House.
