A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Diamond World Managing
Director (MD) Dilip Kumar Agarwala on a four-day remand in a case filed over an
attempted murder during the July-August 2024 uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the
order after a hearing, said State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Earlier, investigation officer Sub-Inspector Md Sumon Mia of
Uttara West Police Station filed two separate petitions seeking to show
Agarwala arrested in the case and place him on remand for interrogation.
The prosecution supported the petitions, while defence
lawyers including Anwarul Kabir sought cancellation of the remand plea and his
bail. After hearing both sides, the court ordered that Agarwala be shown arrested
and granted a four-day remand.
According to the case statement, Abul Jabbar was shot in
front of BNS Centre on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway under Uttara West Police
Station on 5 August 2024, in the final hours of the July Uprising. He remained
under hospital treatment until 26 September that year.
After recovering, Jabbar filed the attempted murder case
with Uttara West Police Station on 27 March 2025. The case named 50 people,
including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, as defendants, and accused
another 100 to 150 unidentified people.
The remand petition said, Agarwala, 57, was a member of the
Awami League's central subcommittee on industries and commerce and a
prospective candidate for the Chuadanga-1 constituency from the now-banned party.
The petition claimed that investigators had found evidence
suggesting Agarwala was physically present at the scene of shooting in Uttara
on 5 August 2024, with other accused, and took part in the crime.
Police sought remand to uncover the circumstances of the
incident, identify and arrest other suspects, collect their names and
addresses, and recover the firearms allegedly used during the incident.
Earlier, on 19 October, the Detective Branch of Dhaka
Metropolitan Police arrested Agarwala from a residence in the capital's Banani
area.
The following day, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court sent him to a one-day remand in a money laundering case involving Tk678.19 crore through gold and diamond smuggling.
