Dhaka-6 MP Ishraque Hossain has said he wants to focus on resolving the city’s existing problems rather than become mayor, pledging to play a strong role in addressing urban issues.

He made the remarks on Tuesday while visiting a temple in the capital’s Gandaria area on the occasion of Durga Puja.

Ishraque said many people attending the event had expressed their desire to see him as mayor and were praying for him.

However, he said he attached greater importance to resolving local problems and ensuring the construction of the temple than to becoming mayor. “As the local MP, I will certainly play a strong role in addressing your problems and ensuring that your temple is built.”

He said he would try to secure government funding as soon as possible to begin construction of the temple. He also pledged to provide assistance personally.

Speaking about his involvement in resolving urban problems, Ishraque said he had been working on city-related issues for a long time. Since the beginning of his political career, his party had involved him in addressing various urban problems and carrying out civic initiatives.

Drawing on that experience, he said he would play a role in resolving the problems facing the area.

Reiterating his stance against drugs, Ishraque said, “I have declared war on drugs. This war will continue. We will keep fighting it.”

Meanwhile, President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accepted Ishraque Hossain’s resignation as state minister for liberation war affairs, with the Cabinet Division issuing a gazette notification on Tuesday.

Ishraque announced his resignation at a press conference at the National Press Club on Monday following a controversy that erupted after videos circulated on social media on Saturday showed him carrying a firearm during an anti-drug drive in Gandaria.

The incident drew widespread criticism and raised questions about his conduct as a state minister.
