A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to Md Rakib Hossain,
24, in a case filed over the death of a teacher, Ranjila Parvin, 56, in a
snatching incident near the national parliament in Dhaka.
Judge Ayesha Akter Mousumi of the Dhaka Additional
Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-2 granted him bail on a Tk5,000 bond, said
defence lawyer Md Mehedi Hasan Majumder.
He said the court granted bail to the accused until the
police report is submitted in the case. As there are no other cases against
him, he hopes Rakib will be released from jail soon.
Rakib was the owner of the first motorcycle seized in
connection with the case. However, it was not used in the snatching incident
and was at a garage at the time, the defence claimed, adding that CCTV footage
was available to support the claim.
The actual motorcycle used in the snatching was later
recovered, the lawyer said, alleging that Rakib had been implicated in the case
only to harass him.
On 31 August, the court placed Rakib on a five-day remand.
After the remand period ended, he was sent to jail on 5 September and had
remained in custody since then.
On 29 August, a snatcher grabbed Ranjila Parvin’s bag in
front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue while she was travelling
by a battery-run rickshaw with her husband to see an eye specialist.
The force of the pull caused her to fall from the moving rickshaw
onto the road, leaving her critically injured with a severe head injury.
She was first taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College
Hospital and was later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors
declared her dead. Her husband filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police
Station.
