A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered that Nasir Uddin Sathi,
chairman of private television channel MyTV, be shown arrested in a murder case
over the killing of Pappu Chowdhury, 28, in the capital’s Jatrabari area during
the July Uprising of 2024.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the
order following a petition by police, said State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Earlier, Sub-Inspector Soumitra Sarkar of Jatrabari Police
Station filed the petition on 12 October, seeking to have Nasir Uddin shown
arrested in the case. The court fixed Sunday for a hearing in the presence of
the accused.
During the hearing, State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon
argued in favour of the petition, while Nasir Uddin’s lawyer, Abdullah Al
Mansur Ripon, opposed the move.
After hearing both sides, the court ordered that Nasir Uddin
be shown arrested in the case and subsequently sent him to jail.
Earlier, on Thursday, Nasir Uddin was also shown arrested in
another July-related murder case filed with Mirpur Model Police Station. So
far, he has been shown arrested in six cases.
According to the case statement, Pappu Chowdhury was shot at
around 2:30pm on 4 August 2024 while participating in the July uprising in
front of Donia College in Jatrabari. He was rescued and taken to Dhaka Medical
College Hospital, where he died the following day while undergoing treatment.
On 23 August last year, a man named Ali Chowdhury filed the case against 86 people, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, over the incident. Police arrested Nasir Uddin Sathi from the capital’s Gulshan area on 17 August last year.
