A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the seizure and freezing of properties owned by former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Khandker Golam Faruk and his wife, Sharmin Akter Khan, over allegations of acquiring assets beyond their known sources of income.
Acting Judge Ayesha Akter Mousumi of the Dhaka Metropolitan
Senior Special Judge’s Court passed the orders following separate applications
filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), court sources said.
According to ACC sources, the court ordered the seizure of
Faruk’s immovable properties worth Tk1.33 crore and the freezing of Tk1.35
crore held in five bank accounts in his name.
It also ordered the seizure of immovable properties worth Tk1.51
crore jointly owned by Faruk and his wife and the freezing of Tk12.02 lakh held
in two bank accounts in their joint names.
According to the ACC petitions, an inquiry officer was
appointed to investigate allegations that Faruk and his wife had acquired
substantial assets through illegal means.
During the inquiry, the commission reviewed documents
collected from various sources, information obtained from relevant government
offices and their income tax records.
The inquiry found that Faruk had net assets worth Tk3.76 crore in his name, excluding liabilities, while his family expenditure amounted to Tk36.79 lakh. His total accumulated assets and expenditure stood at Tk4.13 crore, against an admissible income of Tk2.85 crore.
The discrepancy between his assets and admissible income was
Tk1.27 crore, which the ACC said appeared to constitute assets beyond his known
sources of income.
The inquiry also found that Faruk’s wife, Sharmin Akter
Khan, a homemaker, had immovable and movable assets worth Tk3.27 crore. Including
family expenditure of Tk2.35 lakh, her total accumulated assets and expenditure
stood at Tk3.30 crore, against an admissible income of Tk24.77 lakh.
The difference between her assets and admissible income was
Tk3.05 crore, which the ACC said appeared to be beyond her known sources of
income.
