The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined 120 businesses a total of Tk815,000 during nationwide drives against market irregularities involving fruits, edible oil and other essentials.
On Monday, 56 teams inspected wholesale and retail markets in Dhaka and 41 districts to curb overpricing, stabilise prices and ensure normal supplies.
Officials checked selling prices, purchase and sales receipts, price lists, and weights and measures. Traders were warned against unjustified price hikes, overcharging, artificial shortages and stockpiling.
Fruit traders were also cautioned against selling rotten fruits mixed with fresh ones and using harmful chemicals or unauthorised substances.
The DNCRP urged businesses to display updated price lists, preserve transaction receipts and ensure accurate weights and measures. Consumers were advised to check prices, weights and expiry dates and retain purchase receipts.
Consumers can report overcharging, weight manipulation, adulteration and other forms of fraud by calling the DNCRP hotline at 16121.
The directorate said the drives would continue to maintain market discipline and ensure fair prices and normal supplies.
