The Jatiya
Party (JaPa) on Monday noon issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government to
detain suspects involved in an attack on party chief GM Quader’s residence hours
after the vandalism took place at the house in Uttara, Dhaka.
If the law
enforcers fail to identify and detain the suspects, the party would launch
stringent street movement across the country, warned the party’s Secretary
General Barrister Shamim Haider Patwary at a press conference.
The attack earlier in the morning was not simply an act of vandalism, and rather amounts to an attempt on the party chief’s life, Patwary alleged at the press conference.
Despite
repeated mob attacks across the country, the government has failed to rein in
the anarchists, he said, urging the government to ensure co-existence of political
parties from different backgrounds.
Earlier,
around 10:30am, a group of people threw brickbats at GM Quader’s house in
Uttara while he was inside, leaving multiple windows shattered, said Uttara
West Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Khalid Mansur.
Police are
working to identify the suspects, he told reporters.
GM Quader
told reporters that the attackers could not enter the house as the front gate
was locked, but chanted different slogans, alleging that Quader was an ally of
India and Awami League, a banned political party.
Later, as
police and others approached the area, the attackers left the site, GM Quader
said.
