Two Dhaka courts on Monday allowed separate police petitions to show four accused, including former Rajshahi-4 lawmaker Abul Kalam Azad, arrested in separate cases filed with Jatrabari and Mirpur Model police stations.

The other three accused are former additional deputy inspector general of police Md Hamidul Alam, Serniabat Moinuddin Ahmed Abdullah, son of former lawmaker Abul Hasnat Abdullah and a former director of FBCCI, and former Swechchhasebak League president Habibur Rahman Habib.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates Sara Farzana Haque and Ariful Islam passed the orders, said state prosecutor Samsuddoha Sumon.

Earlier in the day, police produced the accused before the courts and filed petitions seeking to show them arrested in cases linked to the July student-mass uprising in 2024.

According to the applications, police sought to show Moinuddin arrested in a murder case filed over the killing of Firoz Talukdar Palash, who was shot dead in the Mirpur-10 area during the anti-discrimination student movement in July 2024.

Meanwhile, police sought to show Hamidul Alam arrested in an attempted murder case over the shooting of Siam Bepari in the right eye in the same area on 20 July 2024.

The case documents also stated that Habibur Rahman was shown arrested in a murder case filed over the killing of Din Islam Bepari, who was shot dead at Jatrabari intersection on 5 August 2024.

Meanwhile, police sought to show Abul Kalam Azad arrested in an attempted murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station on 18 February 2025. He is currently in jail in connection with another case filed with Boalia Model Police Station in Rajshahi.

Police claimed in the applications that preliminary evidence indicated the accused’s involvement in the respective cases and that their arrest was necessary for proper investigation.
