Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the beautification of an interim waste transfer station (STS) in Ward 11 at North Shahjahanpur on Monday, as part of efforts to improve urban waste management, cleanliness and environmental conditions.

The inauguration took place on 12 October, with the DSCC undertaking the initiative through its Waste Management Department to make waste transfer facilities more effective, environmentally friendly and visually appealing.

The corporation said the initiative would help improve the local environment, maintain cleanliness and raise public awareness about proper waste management.

Addressing the programme as the chief guest, Abdus Salam stressed the need to ensure the welfare, health protection and safe working conditions of sanitation workers.

He said the corporation had arranged death-risk allowances of Tk4 lakh for sanitation workers and signed agreements with around 420 hospitals to provide them with medical services at reduced costs.

He also praised Harpic and Sajeda Foundation for their support in providing protective equipment to sanitation workers.

Calling on city residents to play a more active role in keeping Dhaka clean, the DSCC administrator urged every business establishment to keep waste in its own bins and maintain cleanliness in front of its premises.

He said avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal would help keep the city clean and significantly reduce the risk of dengue.

The administrator also urged residents to report complaints related to civic services to the city corporation, saying action would be taken promptly.

He emphasised that building a clean, green and liveable Dhaka required active public participation alongside the corporation’s initiatives.

Following the inauguration, various safety items were distributed among sanitation workers to improve workplace safety and reduce health risks.

The items included safety gumboots, hand gloves, helmets, safety goggles, first-aid boxes, warning cones, caution floor signs and high-visibility vests.

The DSCC has already undertaken modernisation and beautification projects at waste transfer stations in Kalabagan, Sabji Bagan on Old Elephant Road, Malibagh and the Palashi area near the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Mahbubur Rahman Talukder and local leaders were present at the programme.
