The BNP government has decided to construct an international
airport at Trishal in Mymensingh, and would soon conduct a feasibility study in
this regard, said Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashiduzzaman Millat on
Sunday.
The minister made the remark at a reception programme for
SSC examination top scorers held at a resort in Mymensingh city.
Trishal had previously been considered as a site for a new
international airport near Dhaka. A pre-feasibility study conducted by the
civil aviation ministry in 2010 had identified the area as a preferred
location.
At the Mymensingh event, the civil aviation minister also
sought to address concerns over cost effectiveness following deals to purchase
35 commercial aircrafts.
The aircrafts will be delivered started November 2031, by
when the country’s existing passenger aircraft fleet will start ageing.
By the end of the tentative delivery date in 2037, most of
the existing aircrafts will have reached their expiry period, the minister
added.
The government, however, is expecting the delivery of at
least one Airbus aircraft by June next year, according to sources.
