A Dhaka court on Sunday rejected the bail plea of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam in the case filed over the death of his second wife, Mariam Akter.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Albiruni Mir rejected the bail petition, said State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.

Earlier, defence lawyer Mahbubur Rahman moved a bail petition on behalf of Nazrul, which was opposed by the prosecution. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court rejected the plea.

Claiming that the accused was completely innocent and had no involvement in the incident described in the case, the defence argued that he had been implicated solely to harass him with malicious intent.

The defence also assured the court in the bail petition that the accused would neither go into hiding nor leave the area if granted bail. It stated that the 75-year-old veteran politician and freedom fighter was suffering from a serious heart condition.

The prosecution, however, opposed the bail petition, saying that the investigation was still underway and that the reason behind the death would become clear only after its completion.

Following the hearing, the court rejected the bail petition. Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, was present in court during the hearing.

Earlier, on the evening of 20 September, Mariam's body was recovered from a flat at NAM Bhaban in the capital, hanging. Later that night, police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda, into custody.

Mariam's father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case that night accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam, his wife Maksuda Islam and the deceased's maternal uncle, Obaidur Rahman, of abetting suicide.

The following day, the court granted a four-day remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for Maksuda Begum. Later that night, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

On 22 September, Maksuda Begum was sent to jail after a one-day remand in the case. Another accused, Obaidur Rahman, who was arrested in the case on 23 September, was also sent to jail by the court on the same day.

The court, however, placed Gazi Nazrul Islam on a fresh four-day remand in the case on 24 September. He was later sent to jail after the end of his second round of remand.
