BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has questioned what the opposition seeks to achieve by threatening a remittance shutdown, raising concerns over whether the move is politically motivated and whether there is any hidden plan behind it.
He made the remarks at a prize-giving ceremony and discussion organised by Komol Kuri at the Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) auditorium of Dhaka University on Friday.
Rizvi questioned whether all expatriate Bangladeshis belonged to a particular political party, asking why they were being urged to stop sending remittances.
He said expatriate Bangladeshis sent money not only to support the government but also to provide for their family members.
“Those who want to bring the driving force of the country’s economy to a halt have never engaged in politics in the national interest,” he said.
Speaking about irregularities and mismanagement at airports, Rizvi said any wrongdoing or mismanagement could be protested through a press conference. However, he warned that action would be taken against anyone who physically assaulted an airport official.
Referring to retired Major Akhtar, the BNP acting secretary general said he had not maintained discipline even when he was a member of the BNP.
Rizvi added that if Akhtar did anything warranting action, Jamaat itself would take measures against him.
