A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered that Dhaka University teacher AKM Jamal Uddin and Awami League leader Istak Ahmed Shimul be shown arrested in an Anti-Terrorism Act case.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the orders, said State Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Jamal Uddin is a professor of Social Sciences at DU, while Shimul is a member of the Science and Technology Sub-Committee of the activities-banned Awami League.
Earlier, Paltan Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Nuruzzaman produced the accused before the court and filed two separate petitions seeking their detention.
During the hearing, the defence sought bail for their clients, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court ordered that the duo be sent to jail.
According to the detention applications, leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and their financiers gathered in Gulistan and adjoining areas on 18 May 2025, allegedly to carry out subversive and destructive activities.
Police said the investigation had found sufficient evidence that Jamal Uddin and Shimul were allegedly involved in supporting the banned organisation and its activities and conspiring to commit offences.
