A Dhaka court on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam in a case filed over the death of his second wife Mariam Akter.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order, said state prosecutor Harun Or Rashid.
Defence lawyer Mahbubur Rahman sought bail for Gazi Nazrul, citing a compromise petition submitted by the complainant and the accused’s illness.
He told the court that the complainant had no objection to the accused being granted bail and prayed for his release.
State prosecutor Harun Or Rashid opposed the bail petition, saying a compromise in a case filed under non-compoundable sections was unlawful and had no validity in the case.
“The investigation is still under way. Only after its completion will it be clear whether it was a suicide or a murder,” he said.
The state counsel also questioned the role of Abdul Hamid, whose name appeared in the compromise petition, and sought his detention along with the complainant.
Following the hearing, the court rejected the bail petition.
Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah was present in court during the hearing.
However, the lawyer for Mariam’s uncle Obaidur Rahman, a former driver of Gazi Nazrul, did not appear at the hearing despite filing a bail petition.
Earlier, on the evening of 20 September, the
hanging body of Mariam was recovered from a flat at NAM Bhaban in the capital.
Later that night, police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda
Begum into custody.
Mariam’s father Masum Billah filed a case
that night accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Begum and Obaidur Rahman of
abetting suicide.
The following day, the court granted four-day
remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and one-day remand for Maksuda Begum. Later that
night, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch of Dhaka
Metropolitan Police.
On 22 September, Maksuda Begum was sent to
jail after completing her one-day remand. Obaidur Rahman, who was arrested in
the case on 23 September, was also sent to jail the same day.
The court sent Gazi Nazrul Islam on a fresh
four-day remand in the case on 24 September. He was later sent to jail after
the end of his second round of remand.
