A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed former lawmaker and Awami League leader Mostak Ahmed Ruhi on a four-day remand in a killing case linked to the July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ismail passed the order after a hearing, said Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqui.

The court also remanded Kabir Hossain, joint secretary of the Awami League’s Mohammadpur unit, for four days in the same case.

Earlier, Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Zahidul Islam Kabir, also the investigating officer of the case, produced the accused before the court and sought seven days’ remand for each.

Police said interrogating the accused was necessary to recover the weapon used in the killing, arrest the fugitive and unidentified accused, and uncover the actual motive and circumstances behind the murder.

During the hearing, defence lawyers opposed the remand plea, seeking bail for their clients. After hearing both sides, the court passed the order.

On 23 September, police arrested Ruhi and Kabir in the capital’s Mohammadpur area. The following day, a court rejected their bail petitions and sent them to jail.

According to the case statement, Raju Ahmed, 24, a courier service employee, was shot while watching the protest around 4:30pm on 19 July 2024 in the Banshbari area under Mohammadpur Police Station.

Locals took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Raju's father filed the case on 27 August 2024.
