A Chattogram court on Monday sentenced a former driver of Chattogram WASA and his wife to three years’ imprisonment on charges of acquiring assets illegally.
Chattogram Divisional Special Judge Mizanur Rahman
delivered the verdict on Monday in presence of the accused.
The convicts were identified as Mohammad Tajul
Islam, and his wife Khairunnahar Begum, of the city’s Amin Jute Mill area under
Bayezid Bostami police station.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public
Prosecutor Mokarram Hossain said the court sentenced Tajul to three years'
rigorous imprisonment, fined Tk15,69,193 and six more months’ imprisonment in
default.
On the other hand, his wife Khairunnahar was also
awarded three years' rigorous imprisonment, financial penalty of Tk15,69,193,
and six more months’ imprisonment in default.
She was also fined Tk1 lakh more in a separate
section, the prosecutor said.
According to the deposition of the case, Tajul and
his wife allegedly acquired wealth beyond their known sources of income and
invested the money in purchasing land and constructing a building after the
name of Khairunnahar.
Khairunnahar opened an income tax file in her own
name and showed the assets and their sources of income in an attempt to
legitimise her husband's illegally earned money.
ACC filed a case against the couple in this
connection in March 2022.
After completing investigation, charge sheet was
submitted against them. A court framed charges in the case on 1 July last year.
The court pronounced the verdict after recording
depositions of nine witnesses, said the PP.
