A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the freezing of movable assets worth Tk155 crore held in various bank accounts of Awami League Presidium Member Kazi Zafarullah, his wife Nilufar Zafarullah, and their children Kazi Omar Zafar, Kazi Raihan Zafar and Anushka Mehreen Zafar.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior
Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following a petition filed by
the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said ACC prosecutor Tarikul Islam.
According to the ACC
petition, the frozen assets include Tk24.64 crore of Kazi Zafarullah at Meghna
Bank PLC, Tk18.6 crore at Midland Bank PLC and Tk7.5 crore at the Gulshan
branch of Premier Bank PLC.
The assets frozen in the
name of his wife Nilufar Zafar include Tk18.6 crore at the Banani branch of
Midland Bank and Tk8.19 crore at the Gulshan branch of Premier Bank PLC.
His son Kazi Omar Zafar
has Tk71.22 lakh in FDRs at Meghna Bank PLC, Tk9.61 crore at Midland Bank PLC and
Tk13.52 crore at the Gulshan branch of Premier Bank PLC.
Another son, Kazi Raihan
Zafar, has Tk12.42 crore and US$16,500 at Meghna Bank PLC, and Tk10.95 crore at
the Gulshan branch of Premier Bank PLC.
His daughter Anushka Mehreen Zafar has Tk1.84 crore at Meghna Bank PLC, Tk8.99 crore in Midland Bank PLC and Tk20.92 crore at the Gulshan branch of Premier Bank PLC.
Earlier, ACC Assistant Director and Investigating Officer Md Saidur Rahman filed the petition seeking the freezing of the assets, saying that an investigation is underway into allegations of corruption and money laundering against the accused.
The ACC further said it
had learnt from a reliable source that the accused were attempting to transfer,
relocate, sell or otherwise dispose of the movable assets they had acquired.
If the assets were
transferred, relocated or sold before the disposal of the allegations, it could
hamper the investigation, the ACC said, seeking orders to freeze the movable
assets in the interest of a proper investigation.
