Children
and elderly people who regularly gather near vehicles at traffic signals on the
busy Bijoy Sarani intersection were delighted by a special gesture from Prime
Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday.
Whenever
the prime minister’s vehicle stops at the signal, a group of children and
teenagers holding colourful flowers and bottles of water often run towards it.
Elderly people also come closer to catch a glimpse of Tarique Rahman, with many
raising their hands in greeting. The prime minister, in turn, often waves back
to them.
Although
they rarely exchange words, such encounters through the car window have created
a bond between the prime minister and the people who live and work on the
streets of the capital.
At
around 1:30pm on Saturday, some people suddenly approached the street children
at Bijoy Sarani, bringing food and a message of warmth on the prime minister’s
special instruction.
Additional
Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Atikur Rahman Ruman was present there to
deliver the gesture.
A
meal was arranged for the children at a hotel near Bijoy Sarani intersection.
For the children who spend their days working in the heat and rain, the meal
was more than just lunch -- it was a gesture of care from the country’s top
leadership.
The
children were reportedly delighted to learn that the prime minister had
remembered them. The special gesture from the person they often see waving at
them from his vehicle brought them joy and relief from the fatigue of the day.
