Corn Square will become a symbol of Lalmonirhat as maize has emerged as the district’s major cash crop and an important part of its economic identity, Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu has said.
“Maize has become the branding crop of Lalmonirhat. Its
cultivation has increased significantly, and it has now become the district’s
major cash crop. The lives of farmers in the region have changed through maize
cultivation,” he said.
The minister was speaking after inaugurating the
construction work of Corn Square in the heart of Lalmonirhat town on Friday
afternoon, according to a press release.
He said the square would be developed with an iconic
architectural design to reflect the importance of maize to the district.
“Just as India Gate is a symbol of Delhi and Faisal Mosque
is a symbol of Islamabad, Corn Square will become a symbol of Lalmonirhat,”
Dulu said.
The minister said maize cultivation had transformed the lives of farmers in the district, bringing economic opportunities to rural communities.
Abul Kasem of Hatibandha has been cultivating maize since
1991. At that time, maize yields were low and farmers showed little interest in
the crop.
The situation has changed significantly over the past three
decades, he said. Farmers in his village are now cultivating maize as the local
soil is suitable for the crop, while yields and market prices are also
satisfactory.
Small agro-based industries are also developing around maize
production in the area, creating new economic opportunities and raising hopes
for the development of the relatively backward region.
Lalmonirhat Deputy Commissioner Md Rashedul Haque Prodhan,
District Council Administrator AKM Mominul Haque, government officials and
political leaders were present at the programme.
