The government has raised passenger fares on inland waterways following an increase in fuel prices in the domestic market, with the revised rates coming into effect from 24 September 2026.
The Ministry of Shipping issued a gazette notification on Tuesday (29 September) in this regard from its TA branch.
Signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Chhanda Pal, the notification said passenger fares had been re-fixed under Rule 27 of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport (Inland Routes, Permits, Timetables and Fare Fixation) Rules, 2019, due to the increase in fuel prices.
Under the revised rates, the passenger fare for the first 100 kilometres of a waterway journey has been increased by 22 poisha per kilometre, from Tk2.95 to Tk3.17 per passenger.
For journeys exceeding the first 100 kilometres, the fare has been raised by 19 poisha per kilometre, from Tk2.52 to Tk2.71 per passenger.
The minimum passenger fare on inland waterways has also been increased by Tk3, from Tk32 to Tk35.
The notification said the revised fare rates must be displayed at all river-port terminals and in visible locations on vessels.
It also said all previous gazette notifications and orders concerning the fixation of fares for vessels had been repealed.
The revised fares will remain effective from September 24, 2026, the notification said.
