A Dhaka court on Monday imposed a travel ban on Bestway Group Managing Director (MD) and CEO Md Mizanur Rahman and his wife Tania Sultana Tanvi over allegations of money laundering and acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income under the guise of a housing business.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan
Kabir passed the order following an application filed by the Anti-Corruption
Commission (ACC), said ACC Public Relations Officer Akterul Islam.
Earlier, on 24 September, ACC Assistant Director
(Money Laundering) Md Selim Mia submitted the application to the court.
According to the application, the ACC is conducting
an inquiry into allegations that Mizanur Rahman and his wife Tania Sultana
Tanvi laundered around Tk200 crore through fraud under the guise of a housing
business and acquired assets beyond their known sources of income.
The application further said a case was filed under
the Money Laundering Prevention Act with Banani Police Station on 21 July
against Bestway Land Properties Ltd MD Mizanur Rahman, Chairman Tania Sultana
and Director Md Momen over allegations of taking money from customers in the
name of plot allocation but failing to hand over the promised plots or return
the money.
The ACC said it had received information from a
reliable source that Mizanur Rahman and his wife were attempting to leave the
country and sought the court’s permission to prevent the couple from travelling
abroad in the interest of a proper investigation into the allegations.
