A Dhaka court on Monday ordered Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam to be sent to jail after the end of his second round of remand in a case filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station over the alleged abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam
passed the order after a hearing, said Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector
Rafiqur Islam.
According to court sources, Investigation Officer of
the case and DB Tejgaon Zonal Team Inspector (retd) Mohammad Salahuddin
produced the accused before the court after a four-day remand and sought an
order to keep him in jail.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Mahbubul Islam
sought bail for the accused, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After
hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered that Gazi
Nazrul Islam be sent to jail.
Mahbubul Islam claimed that even after two rounds of
remand, the investigation officer could not present any evidence of Gazi Nazrul
Islam’s involvement before the court.
“We sought bail for him considering that he is a
four-time member of parliament and his age,” Mahbubul Islam said, adding, “He
is not someone who would flee and will cooperate with the investigation in
every possible way.”
On 22 September, Gazi Nazrul’s wife Maksuda Begum
was sent to jail after a one-day remand in the case. Another accused, Obaidur
Rahman, who was arrested in the case on 23 September, was also sent to jail by
the court on the same day.
The court, however, sent Gazi Nazrul Islam on a
fresh four-day remand in the case on 24 September.
Earlier, on the evening of 20 September, the hanging
body of Gazi Nazrul’s second wife, Mariam, was recovered from a flat at NAM
Bhaban in the capital. Later that night, police took Gazi Nazrul Islam and his
first wife Maksuda into custody.
Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case that
night accusing Gazi Nazrul Islam, his wife Maksuda Islam and the deceased’s
maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting suicide.
The following day, the court granted a four-day
remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and one-day remand for Maksuda Begum. Later that
night, the investigation was transferred to the Detective Branch of Dhaka
Metropolitan Police.
