A Dhaka court on Sunday sent 27 individuals to jail after they were detained from the central office of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) in the capital’s Paltan area on Saturday.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam
passed the order following a hearing on a police forwardal petition.
The court also fixed Monday for hearing the bail petitions
of the accused, said Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Masud Khan.
Earlier, police produced the detainees before the court
under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), seeking orders to
keep them in judicial custody.
According to the forwardal report submitted to the court,
the accused allegedly created an unstable and disorderly situation inside the
JSD central office on Saturday and chanted the "Joy Bangla" slogan.
Police subsequently detained them with the assistance of
people present at the scene. The detainees failed to provide a satisfactory
explanation when questioned regarding their presence at the location.
Police stated they had preliminary suspicions that the accused might be involved in a cognisable offence, arguing that their detention was essential in the interest of a fair and proper investigation.
Law enforcers detained the group from the party office on Saturday
following allegations that an Awami League-linked gathering was underway on the
premises.
