Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed on Saturday inspected the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1 following an overnight attack in which the health facility was vandalised and equipment and other valuables were looted.
He
visited the centre around 3pm.
Speaking
to reporters after the inspection, the DMP commissioner said a case had been
filed against 200 to 250 unidentified people in connection with the incident.
Police
have so far arrested four people, he said.
After
inspecting the scene, Mosleh Uddin said, “The incident was not a sudden act of
vandalism but a planned attack carried out over a considerable period of time.
Medical equipment and essential laboratory instruments were looted from the
facility.”
He
said police took action immediately after receiving information about the
incident and that drives were under way to arrest the main accused named in the
case and others involved.
Asked
about alleged police negligence, the commissioner said preventing such an
incident, which occurred late at night, was the responsibility of the police.
A
three-member committee, headed by Additional Deputy Commissioner of Darus
Salam, has been formed to investigate how quickly police reached the scene
after receiving the information and whether there was any negligence or failure
on the part of police, he said.
“The
committee has been instructed to submit its report by Saturday. If negligence
is established, strict legal action will be taken against the police personnel
responsible,” he said.
