In a major policy decision, the government has decided to set up solar panels on the rooftops of 6,544 local government institutions across the country, targeting around 300 megawatts of electricity generation with an allocation of Tk370 crore.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam disclosed the information at a press conference at the Secretariat on Wednesday.

The institutions include councils, municipalities, union parishads, executive engineers’ offices, offices under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), WASA, public health facilities, and markets or growth centres across the country.

“We are going to generate electricity through solar panels on the rooftops of these institutions,” the state minister said.

He said funds had been released to the institutions from a special allocation for the programme.

The state minister said separate letters had been issued to the institutions with instructions to implement the programme, with a target of completing it by 27 January.

A total of Tk370 crore has been released for the initiative, he added.

Solar energy is a clean and renewable source of energy that generates electricity without directly producing greenhouse gas emissions during operation. Its use can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support a shift towards more sustainable energy production.
