The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) today opened a foot over bridge over the Rampura Canal connecting Aftabnagar with Banasree while two more permanent bridges are being constructed in that area to ease traffic congestion and ensure safe movement of people.
DNCC Administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan inaugurated the steel foot over bridge adjacent to Farazi Hospital this evening.
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Mohammad Ashaduz Zaman presided over the inaugural function while Chief Engineer Brigadier General Syed Raquibul Hasan, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imru-al-Quais and the project director, among others, were present at the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, the DNCC administrator said the city corporation took initiatives to construct three bridges- one foot over bridge and two permanent bridges suitable for vehicular movement, over the Rampura Canal connecting Aftabnagar with Banasree to facilitate communication, ensure safe travel for school and college students and reduce traffic congestion.
The foot over bridge named as bridge no 2 opened to public this evening as part of that initiatives, he said, adding, the development works of the two more bridges are progressing rapidly under the directives of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Safiqul said the inauguration of this steel foot over bridge proves the Prime Minister fulfills the promises that he made before the people.
He said two more permanent bridges are being constructed beside the foot over bridge to provide alternative routes during the ongoing MRT project and reduce congestion on the main road.
Heavy vehicles will also be able to use the two bridges, the DNCC administrator said, adding that there are plans to complete their construction quickly.
He said the construction of steel foot over bridge no 2 had been completed efficiently with the cooperation of the Bangladesh Army, adding that the bridge would facilitate communication for local residents and contribute to the safe movement of students.
Calling upon local residents to play a responsible role in maintaining the bridge, Safiqul said the city corporation alone could not protect the attractive structure.
He also urged residents not to dump waste into the adjacent canal.
The DNCC administrator said the city corporation has taken an initiative to clean and renovate the canal.
"If the canal is cleaned, renovated and properly maintained, it will enhance the beauty of the area and may eventually be developed as a tourist attraction," he said.
Expressing his commitment to building a 'Clean Dhaka, Green Dhaka', Safiqul urged residents of Aftabnagar and Banasree to cooperate with the DNCC in building a clean city.
According to DNCC sources, the three bridges are being constructed at a cost of Taka 89.54 crore under a DNCC-funded project. Bangladesh Army supervised the construction of the 42 metres long and 3.80 metres wide steel foot over bridge while two bridges will be constructed under the supervision of the Bangladesh Navy.
Under the project, bridge no 1 near Ideal School will be 38 metres long and 15.40 metres wide while bridge no 3 near Meradia Bazar will be 49 metres long and 15.40 metres wide.
