A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Obaidur Rahman to jail in a
case filed over the abetment of suicide of Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul
Islam’s second wife, Mariam Khatun.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order,
said Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam.
Earlier in the day, Obaidur was produced before the court
after his arrest, and Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the Detective Branch’s
Tejgaon zonal team sought an order to keep him in jail.
No lawyer appeared for Obaidur in court. After the hearing,
the court passed the order to send him to jail.
According to the petition, evidence has been found of
Obaidur’s involvement in Mariam’s suicide. The investigation also found that he
had been involved in various matters concerning MP Nazrul even before Mariam’s
marriage to him.
The petition sought that Obaidur be kept in jail in the
interest of a proper investigation and ensuring justice, adding that the
investigation agency would seek his remand later.
Earlier, Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, claimed that Obaidur
Rahman was responsible for his daughter’s death and that the truth would come
to light if he was arrested.
Obaidur is reportedly the maternal uncle of the deceased
Mariam. He also served as Gazi Nazrul Islam’s personal driver.
Mariam’s body was found hanging in a flat on the second
floor of NAM Bhaban, a residential complex for lawmakers in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar,
on Sunday evening.
Her father later filed a case alleging abetment of suicide
against Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Begum and Obaidur. Gazi Nazrul is
now on remand, while Maksuda is in jail.
